Ben Affleck’s pal Jason Mewes speaks out about JLo divorce rumors
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Jason Mewes, known for his roles in Kevin Smith films alongside Ben Affleck, recently expressed doubt about rumors of trouble between Affleck and his wife, Jennifer Lopez.
In a conversation with TMZ on Wednesday, May 22, Mewes, 49, said, “I don’t believe that,” referring to the speculation. He suggested that their busy schedules and family commitments might be misinterpreted as marital issues.
Reflecting on their 2022 wedding in Savannah, Georgia, Mewes noted, “It just seemed, after 20 years … very sincere and real. I would be shocked [if they split].” He added that their interactions during the wedding appeared genuine.
Despite recent rumors, Mewes remains unconvinced of any serious problems, pointing to the couple’s frequent public appearances together, often wearing their wedding rings. He questioned the quick leap to conclusions about their relationship, emphasizing that different lifestyles and public perceptions can be misleading.
Reports have surfaced that Lopez, 54, and Affleck, 51, are struggling with their differing views on privacy, with a source saying in the latest issue of PEOPLE, “She likes to open her heart to her fans and to the world. He is more introspective and private. This has been difficult day-to-day.”
While Affleck has been busy filming The Accountant 2 and missed the premieres of Lopez’s new movie, Atlas, in Los Angeles and Mexico City, as well as the Met Gala earlier in May, the couple’s relationship status has been in question.
Affleck has been spotted staying at a house in Brentwood, Los Angeles, further raising eyebrows about the couple’s reported split. Photos obtained by TMZ show Affleck leaving the Brentwood property on the morning of Thursday, May 16, where sources say he has been spending the night. This sighting comes amid reports from InTouch suggesting that Bennifer might be experiencing marital issues, with claims that Affleck has moved out of their Beverly Hills home.
Additionally, during a press event for her new movie in Mexico City on May 22, Lopez firmly responded to a reporter’s question about the divorce rumors, saying, “You know better than that,” after her co-star Simu Liu interjected to steer the conversation back to professional matters.
